Aggressive energy is differentiated by Perls, Hefferline and Goodman (1951) into both annihilation and destruction. In annihilation the painful object (other) is rendered non-existent: Primarily, annihilation is a defensive response to pain, bodily invasion, or danger. In avoidance and flight, the animal takes himself out of the painful field; in killing, he “coldly” removes the offending object from the field .

It is supported in much psychological and sociological study that everything in human experience is relational, has polarities, and extremes of intensity. Each entity has an opposite. Emotions, thoughts, and behaviours are open to differing qualities, differing depths or superficialities, differing lightness or emphases. Polarities are taught in fairy stories; for example, the good fairy/ wicked witch; the rich King/poor woodcutter; the handsome prince/ugly toad. Indeed, it is in the telling of these stories, a practice that occurs in cultures all over the world, that the integration of the splitting processes occurs.

Part of emotional maturity is the ability to tolerate, rather than split off, that which we cannot change. Gestalt philosophy (Perls, Hefferline, & Goodman, 1951) posits that our choices are based on life experiences that are in our awareness. Sociological theorists show how choices are influenced by society’s norms, cultural beliefs and values, and our own considered responses to these factors.
