More directly, the concept of blood-soul and spirit-soul is analogous in Western antiquity with eros and logos; in the Chinese tradition with yin and yang, and in Christianity with body and spirit. All these great pairings have also included the fundamental differentiation between ‘feminine’ (eros, yin, body) and ‘masculine’ (logos, yang, spirit). But there is a crucial difference between the first two and the third: whereas logos and eros and yin and yang are complementary, equally essential elements in the great dance of creation, the Christian tradition came to see body and spirit as antagonists rather than vital partners.
