The best advice I can offer is to examine the minimum and suggested hardware requirements that come with all of the software you plan on using. Most software will detail the minimum specifications and suggested specifications for how much hard drive space is required, how much memory is needed, and if any special hardware is required (such as a scanner or DVD/CD burner). I recommend purchasing a PC that includes the highest suggested hardware requirements for your software (replace suggested with ideal, and you’ll get a better idea of what the software manufacturer actually means).

However, it also offers some valuable features not found in typical word processing programs. Collaborate on a Document with a Friend Google Docs has an exceptional sharing feature. Even getting close to this type of functionality with Microsoft Word or other Microsoft Office applications would require the purchase and configuration of a very complicated and expensive service called Microsoft SharePoint Server, which comes with Windows Server products (and requires an entire slew of licensing fees, in addition to expensive consultant work and a dedicated server).

Consider what an extra $100 (or $300 or $400) saved on software can buy when it comes to a processor, hard drive, or other components: faster speeds, more features, higher capacities, and, ultimately, a longer, more useful life for your PC. Throughout the remaining chapters, I’ll cover brand-name applications that cost anywhere from $30 to $40, all the way up to $500 or more. Keep these prices in mind as you decide whether you absolutely require the brand-name software, can substitute the free competitor, or don’t need that type of application at all.
