Perhaps the intervention did not focus on feelings, or it addressed the wrong defense. Every useful intervention should mobilize unconscious feelings and anxiety. Patients who are willing to tolerate anxiety to achieve their goals will improve in therapy. Patients unwilling to tolerate anxiety will not improve. We must show them how avoiding their anxiety imprisons them and defeats their goals.
