Alsatian immigrant Abraham Schwab founded the store in 1876 at 142 Beale. It moved to 149 Beale in the 1890s and to its present location in 1911. The founder’s grandson, Abe Schwab, runs the store today. In the 1990 documentary Deep Blues, narrator Robert Palmer begins his exploration of the Mississippi Delta at Schwab’s. Abe Schwab tells him that the store used to sell blues 78s (at three for a dollar) and people poured in, lured by the music playing on the speakers.
