2. Midpoint or Half-Turn Rotation (p2) Symmetry Two primary cells are required to create the tile for designs in the midpoint or half-turn rotation (p2) symmetry group. To see how this symmetry group works, cut two of the primary cells from your photocopies of page 32, and stack them on top of each other. Now place a pin at the midpoint of a side and rotate the top one 180°. 5. Create sets of tiles and then put the tiles together by translation. Three different patterns can be generated from this symmetry, depending on whether the side of the cell, the bottom, or both the side and the bottom are midpoint rotated.

1880. When I found a book on M. C. Escher’s work I was enthralled yet mystified. His graphic designs relied on incredibly complicated interlocking patterns and designs. Sometimes more than one image joined with another. It was beyond me how those patterns were created, and the books written on the subject reminded me of that high school geometry class; the terminology and explanations were over my head. I knew one day I would take the time to study and try to figure it all out. That time came almost six years ago.

3 Symmetry Drawing E128 by M. C. Escher. 4. Fabric design showing translation (p1) symmetry. 5. Creating the tile for midpoint rotation symmetry. Standard Notation—p2 The p2 designation of this symmetry can be interpreted as the primary cell (p) rotated 180° (2) at the midpoint of a side. In p1 the cell used the entire 360°. In p2, the cell uses half the degrees, or 180°, thus requiring two cells to make a full 360°, or to create the tile. 6. Examples of three variations of midpoint rotation (p2) symmetry.
